A new MAF location for the Turbo GNs
For those of you interested in tinkering with the 86-87 Buick Turbo cars:
With the plastic cased MAF, the places seemed limited as to where to mount
the original MAF sensor. With the Translators, and using the Late MAF,
with
the all metal case, that became less of a worry. I'd heard the
electronics
would safely handle 120dC (highest temp I'd seen with a relocated MAT , was
140dF), so I started looking for options. I'd also, heard of some follks
having rather erratic LV8s, upon ocassions (idle / cruise). So I figured
having a location that for any given throttle opening had the air presented
to it in a repeatable fashion would have to be an improvement. An Open
Filter, surrounded by so much turbulent air that it always was looking at a
different amount of turbulence. Also, while the turbo acts a great check
valve for reversion, it's aways a retriction/delay at lower throttle
openings to when the MAF saw any air flow changes. So I thought mounting
the MAF right up by the Throttle Body would have to be worth trying
Anyway, just had to try it.
I had a spare I/C up pipe. So I ordered a 3" section of straight hose,
and a 2.5 to 3" one. I figured out how much shorter the new pipe had to
be,
to mount the MAF right at the TB opening. The stock I/C up pipe doesn't at
all tolerate expanding, in the curved region. But we'd already cut it to
lenght, and had the straight piece. That did tolerate expanding *some*.
So
we trimmed things, and did some welding. Now, knowing what I do, I'd just
get two of the 2.5" to 3" hoses ($$).
Also, timmed the hoses to min lengths to get things to fit. The new
MAF is right at the TB using the 2.5 to 3" adapter hose and then the 3"
straight piece to the I/C Up Pipe pipe, and everything *just* fits. The
MAF
is touching the turbo intake pipe. A plenum spacer, a PT+E upper, or a
hemco, might make this all a little easier to get in there. There is no
way I see to get a 3.5 MAF in there with out raising the upper Plenum.
Had
to split the harness open to move the MAF sonnector over to the new
location. I mounted the MAF with it's connector pointed up on the drivers
side as a matter of convience in case it would fail, I have a stock MAF in
the trunk. The Air Filter just hose clamped to where the MAF connected to
the intake pipe.
Does it make a difference?, it seems to. My idle is rock steady (700
rpm in D, with the 206 hyd roller cam, 40#/hr injectors), and all cruise
conditions seem more responsive. You can even rev the motor in neutral and
have a lot crisper responce. Course more tuning in now needed along with
further test driving.
The roads are way too cold for any real performance testing.
Your results may vary, yada, yada. Not to be attempted without adult
supervision. may be illegal, may cause severe engine damage, even may
cause blindness,
Cheers
Bruce
