It is for gear position to the ECM - you just need to get the shift lever for 
a 96 up.  I just went the other way and put a 97 transmission in my 93, but I 
no longer have the onger shaft you will need.  BTW - I want to rebuild the 
trans that came out - should I get a GM 4l60E manual or are there even better 
aftermarket ones?
